The tiny town of Port Costa (population about 250)—the setting for this month’s fashion feature—is one of the wonders of the East Bay. Situated on the southern shore of the Carquinez Strait between Crockett and Martinez, it’s a favorite spot for history buffs, bikers, and curiosity seekers. It’s not the easiest place to reach—it’s located about 30 minutes north of Berkeley off Highway 80—but many visitors choose to come via the narrow twists and turns of McEwen Road.

Once you arrive, you will feel as if you’ve traveled back in time. Port Costa was settled in 1879 as a railroad ferry landing, but it dwindled in importance after the railroad bridge at Martinez was built in 1930. Victorian architecture and old railroad tracks still give the town its vintage aura, as do the one-of-a kind businesses that have set up shop here.

Visitors will want to enjoy a meal at the Bull Valley Roadhouse, where they can have a superb farm-to-table dining experience, thanks to executive chef Anthony Paone and owner/beverage director Tamir Benshalom. The restaurant’s decor conjures the town’s magical past; there’s a wall of intriguing sepia-toned photos, Victorian furnishings, and a golden bull suspended over the front door.

Other must-visit sites in town include Compulsive Peddler, a highly curated shop of treasures (open weekends only). Then there’s the fabulously atmospheric Burlington Hotel, which opened in 1883. The hotel is closed at present, however, while it transitions into an operational outpost for the Field Semester, an immersive environmental program for high school students (learn more at fieldsemester.org). The town is also on many bikers’ radars for the funky, lively Warehouse Café, a bar and restaurant located in a former granary.

But it’s the overall magic of the place that stays with you. “Port Costa is a lot like Brigadoon,” says Earl Flewellen, owner of the Burlington Hotel. “It has kind of stayed the same while everything around it has changed. We have key people here who care deeply about this location, and their stewardship makes the difference. There is really nothing like it.”
